Episode 43 - Mahogany Dark Roast

Trivia:
This coming May 12th is National Train Day. On May 9th, 1869 the transcontinental railroad was completed. Talk about thinking big! For the first time in history, the East and West were connected by train.
Over the course of 6 years, 3 different companies laid tracks across 1,912 miles. From the West the train route began in Oakland, California. From the East, it began in Omaha, Nebraska.
They built from each direction until they met in the middle. The final railroad spike hammered in was made of gold. Well sort of last. At a ceremony they dropped in a gold spike, then almost immediately pulled it out, dropped in a regular iron spike, and sent the gold spike to a museum.
